The role of the Manager, Communications is to support communications and awareness related initiatives of Mission, Philanthropy and Executive stakeholders.  For Mission—or Research, Health Promotion and Survivorship—the Manager, Communications plays a lead role in connecting academic subject matter, activities and to PCC’s many audiences from donors to governments.    As the champion of PCC brand and messaging, the Manager, Communications develops media messages as outreach and for response.  And, using and customizing multiple channels (web, digital and social media) the Manager customizes content to reach diverse and broad audiences.   Additional responsibilities include speech and script writing (for video productions), editing and writing or contributing to organization reports such as Annual Report and Mission Impact Report.  

Strategic Communications:
  • Develop and integrate communication plans across Philanthropy, Marketing and Mission  to achieve strategic and annual goals through consultation with key internal partners
  • Develop communication plans for key advocacy and awareness campaigns (e.g., Prostate Awareness Month) and fund-raising campaigns (e.g., Plaid for Dad)
  • Oversee publication of key PCC  information materials for donors, volunteers, employees and the public to ensure consistency with both messaging and brand
  • Plan, develop and execute PCC messages (Mission, fund-raising, direct mail, or on behalf of executive) for delivery to  external groups, including answers to frequently asked questions
  • Manage and broker internal requests for external vendor services related to communication including French translation
  • Maintain a professional and service-oriented approach to building a network of relationships, representing PCC professionally and effectively 
  • Provide communications counsel, leadership and expertise within PCC  to optimize quality, and strategic alignment  of all departments’ communications
Internal/External Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Contribute to the development and execution of a stakeholder management and communication strategies in Philanthropy and Mission
  • Develop and publish  key Board and volunteer communications,  soliciting submissions and determining most effective way to communicate strategic accomplishments
  • Lead physician engagement programs including education and  engaging physicians in advocacy initiatives
  • Coordinate the planning of internal communications including weekly calendar of events, staff meetings and other events 
  • Contribute to the development of the Marketing and Communications Team through sharing best practices and leading professional development activities
  • Provide outcomes content and communications counsel for fundraising direct marketing initiatives 
  • Identify, develop and/or maintain relationships with relevant educational, medical and other health care organizations in support of prostate cancer related communications
Knowledge Translation:
  • Develop research-based  information materials for external lay audiences including support groups, funders and donors in conjunction with Mission experts
  • Partner with Mission in the identification, gathering and evaluation of knowledge and evidence for synthesis to inform policy development and advocacy positions
  • Draft lay summaries of all PCC-funded and Movember-funded research projects and their progress and final reports
  • Conduct interviews with researchers, survivors and stakeholders as appropriate to develop content for various applications
  • Act as Mission representative for external events as required
Public Relations and Media:
  • Act as primary resource for media inquiries either as spokesperson or cultivating and identifying spokespeople across PCC
  • Research, write and edit press releases and liaise with the PR agency regarding distribution
  • Develop Mission-based media materials, including responding to media inquiries, writing and editing quotes and articles on behalf of senior management, and researching and writing articles for external publications
  • Identify and develop new opportunities to raise the profile of Mission, via external publications, social media and other outlets
  • Build and maintain a PCC researcher speaker list for media enquiries and presentations to support groups and other external lay audiences
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communications via analyzing metrics and media impressions

  • With Directors and Managers in Toronto, Halifax and Vancouver regarding key communication requirements for key initiatives in events, corporate and Direct Mail
  • Reports to VP 
Mission  Team
  • With Managers of Research and Health Promotion to identify mission-related material for engagement, education or other stewardship information
  • With VP for key papers or reports or events
  • Movember Foundation regarding joint messaging, initiative planning, outreach and partnership development
  • Media messaging and outreach
  • Joint messaging, initiative planning, outreach and partnership development with academic institutions and health organizations on joint messaging and outreach
  • Vendors on creative development, French translation


Post-secondary Education:
  • Degree in a relevant discipline (Marketing, Communications, PR)
  • Post –degree training in communications and/or public relations
  • 3-5 years of experience, preferably in a health care, scientific or fund-raising environment
  • Demonstrated skill in translating technical or research material into material for general public, lay audiences
  • Exceptional research, writing, proofreading and editing skills
  • Media relations planning or spokesperson experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Professional
  • Website content management systems
  • Video production an asset 
  • Ability to read and write in French is an asset
