Director, Direct Marketing

OBJECTIVE:
The Director of Direct Marketing provides leadership, strategy development and oversight of the direct marketing plans and their implementation in support of Prostate Cancer Canada’s direct response fundraising program.   Reporting to the Senior Director, Marketing and Communications, the Director of Direct Marketing ensures full leverage of mission stories/information and integration of digital media in concert with expert data analysis and segmentation tools—all to achieve meaningful engagement and annual giving goals.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  1. Develop comprehensive strategies to achieve annual and long term direct response goals
    • Identify and assess donor groups, channels and partners to develop strategies and campaigns aligned with PCC’s mission and strategic plan
    • Develop metrics for measuring, reporting and analyzing donors and annual giving categories for insight and decisions regarding segmentation strategies
    • Determine and align budget and other resources indexed to long term and annual business plans
  2. Oversee plan implementation
    • Allocate resources through budget, staff or outsourced partners to ensure accurate, seamless, timely and cost-effective execution of plans
    • Integrate campaigns across channels and audiences into a cohesive plan
    • Apply metrics to audience-specific dashboards for regular reporting and analysis
    • Ensure tracking of any plan deviation or “off plan” activities for reporting or remediation
    • Communicate insights to internal stakeholders regularly via clear and understandable reports and presentations
    • Respond to business inquiries regarding performance through ad hoc analysis and reporting
  3. Manage agencies and external partners
    • Contract, according to PCC policy, with external partners regarding development and/or delivery of campaigns
    • Work with list brokerage to prepare for the selection of exchange and rented data files for an active donor acquisition program
    • Monitor budgets, timelines and quality with key contacts to ensure early response for decision-making or trouble-shooting
  4. Partner with PCC stakeholders
    • Identify campaign communication needs for Marketing and Communications to secure background information on donors, as well as research and survivorship initiatives to collaborate on aligned campaigns
    • Develop opportunities within the Annual Plan for Philanthropy to synchronize initiatives according to other annual giving categories (monthly giving, higher giving levels and legacy giving), and collaborate on decisions regarding segmentation strategies within the Plan  
    • Collaborate with Mission to ensure campaigns fully leverage of mission stories/information
    • Provide budgets, updates and forecasts to Finance for current and accurate reporting to support revisions and decision-making
    • Maintain an accurate set of business rules for the processing of donations and consult with the Database Manager to ensure database accuracy, and to monitor the data selection for individual campaigns
  5. Donor development and stewardship
    • Leverage tools and information to build a complete profile of donors to generate understanding, conversion potential, retention and upgrades
    • Coordination of technology (Raiser’s Edge) and  philanthropy team to develop individualized donor relationships
    • Collaborate with philanthropy team to actively manage and move donors to different funnels through established processes (e.g., as identified by Major Gifts)

Qualifications
 
Post-secondary Education:        
  • Degree or Diploma in related field (marketing, fund-raising)
Experience:
  • Direct Marketing
  • Charity or cause related
  • 7+ years in comparably senior role
  • Project management leadership
Technology:
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Proficiency in Raisers’ Edge
Competencies:
  • Advanced knowledge and abilities in data analysis and market segmentation
  • Demonstrated excellence in written communications with strong verbal skills
  • Strategic, long term thinking with ability to operationalize into annual plans
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving
