Outreach at Springhill Penitentiary

Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic made history Wednesday, March 27th by performing community outreach behind bars at Springhill Penitentiary in Springhill, Nova Scotia. Springhill Institution is a medium security Canadian federal security prison with close to 450 inmates.

The outreach was headed up by Elwood Marsman, the volunteer coordinator of PCCN Blacks in Nova Scotia (BINS), and Peter Mallette, the Executive Director of Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic. Three dozen inmates, all members of
Springhill’s Black Inmates Association, and many with familial connections to prostate cancer, asked questions about prevention, early detection, diet, warning signs, treatment, and side effects.

Sherry Jackson Smith, the Regional Manager of Ethno Cultural Services with Correctional Service Canada says this was the first time that prostate cancer outreach had ever been performed inside the prison. Based on the success of this experience, Mallette is hoping to conduct more prostate cancer prison outreach throughout Atlantic Canada.

Blacks in Nova Scotia (BINS) Support Group Launches

On September 26th, Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic proudly announced the launch of a new support group specifically created for black men in Nova Scotia. This is the first of its kind within the Prostate Cancer Canada Network.

The support group meetings, to be held the last Wednesday of every month, will provide a forum for personal discussion with prostate cancer survivors, including those newly diagnosed and their caregivers. They will also serve as encouragement to motivate other black communities in Canada to offer similar information and support.

Halifax Pride

Under sunny skies and in front of more than 100,000 spectators, PCC Atlantic’s Executive Director Peter Mallette and Rob Istister, volunteer coordinator of the Halifax Rainbow Warriors, PCCN’s only support group for gay men,  marched in the 2012 Halifax Pride Parade Saturday, July 28th.  The annual parade was the star attraction of Pride Week in Halifax which celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Mallette said he was marching for every man, gay or straight, who has or has had prostate cancer.  Along the parade route, which wound its way through the heart of the downtown Halifax business district, Mallette and Isbister received many “thumbs-up” and words of encouragement from prostate cancer survivors and their families who turned out to watch the festivities and to celebrate diversity.

Following the parade, PCC Atlantic (Mallette & Isbister) manned a booth at the Community Fair at the Halifax Wanderer’s Grounds where they talked to hundreds of people about the benefits of early detection and the PSA test, and distributed literature about about prostate cancer.

It's Our Time- to Celebrate!
