Official Launch of Halifax Region Office
March 22, 2011 marked an historic day in the fight against prostate cancer when Prostate Cancer Canada opened its first regional office in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
After raising the PCC flag at Halifax City Hall, Mayor Peter Kelly formally read a proclamation recognizing the significant milestone.
The official ribbon-cutting took place in front of more than 100 guests, including prostate cancer survivors from all over Atlantic Canada, and representatives from government, business and the medical community.
Later in the day, Prostate Cancer Canada hosted a wine and cheese social for the after hours business crowd.
The next day, PCC hosted a fun “How to Tie a Tie” contest at Scotia Square Mall in downtown Halfax. We even distributed tie tying guides for men who needed a little help! NHL alumnus Walt McKechnie – a prostate cancer survivor – also came along to support the event. Thank you Walt, it was great to have you!
The Halifax office brings together 15 regional prostate cancer support groups under the Prostate Cancer Canada National Network. The office, located at 5121 Sackville Street, will be the first permanent home for the PCCN - Halifax support group. It will serve as a focal point for survivors, volunteers and members of the community to meet, share information and support outreach programs designed to raise awareness of early detection and the disease itself.
Peter Mallette, Director, Atlantic Region for Prostate Cancer Canada said the Halifax office will manage several major events in the region this year designed to promote PSA testing and “advance the best thinking and best practices” for the treatment of the disease.
We look forward to working together in the fight against prostate cancer.
Helene Vassos was welcomed onto FX 110.9 where she spoke about the launch of the Halifax office and prostate cancer, if you would like to listen to Helene's interview please use the below links
