Historic prostate cancer support group to launch in Nova Scotia

9/24/2012
Halifax, Nova Scotia - September 24, 2012 – On September 26, Prostate Cancer Canada Atlantic will proudly announce the launch of a new support group specifically created for black men in Nova Scotia. This is the first of its kind within the Prostate Cancer Canada Network.

The support group meetings, to be held the last Wednesday of every month, will provide a forum for personal discussion with prostate cancer survivors, including those newly diagnosed and their caregivers. They will also serve as encouragement to motivate other black communities in Canada to offer similar information and support.

The support group will be led by prostate cancer survivors Mr. Earl Lucas and Mr. Elwood Marsman. They will be assisted by Dr. Tetteh Ago, the head of radiation oncology at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, and Pastor Lennett Anderson of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men. Black men have a 65 per cent higher risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, while one in seven Canadian men will be diagnosed with the disease within their lifetime. Within a decade this number is expected to rise to one in four.

Media are invited to attend the launch event to learn more about this historic event as well as meet and hear from support group leaders and survivors.
