Media Advisory - Prostate Cancer Canada celebrates local Vancouver Hero
Vancouver, British Colombia, April 16 –– Prostate Cancer Canada will honour the late Jack Poole, former VANOC Board Chair and local businessman, with the Local Hero Award. Jack was a generous benefactor to the Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital Foundation with gifts totalling $3 Million for “Jack the Robot”, a da Vinci S HD surgical system, and a $1 Million gift towards the Robert H. N. Ho Research Centre. His lead donation attracted a further $3.5 million in donations including $1.5 million from Jimmy Pattison. Together these donations enabled VGH to become the fourth Canadian hospital to employ robotic technology in surgery.

Calgary, AB, April 10 –– Local Hero Dr. Jay Lee will be honoured on April 11th at the annual Wake Up Call Breakfast, hosted by Prostate Cancer Canada, in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Centre. Dr. Lee is being recognized for his extraordinary contribution to the fight against prostate cancer.

Let's talk about prostate cancer, Canada

Toronto, Ontario – September 14, 2012 – Canadians, mark your calendars for the launch of Prostate Cancer Awareness week on September 17, featuring multiple entertaining events across the country. Prostate Cancer Canada has organized the initiative as a time to engage and inform Canadians about the importance of prevention, education and early detection of prostate cancer – a disease that is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men.

To help build awareness of this all-too-prevalent disease, the following events will be taking place:

CN Tower (Toronto) and BC Place (Vancouver) Light Up, September 17 – Canada’s landmark buildings will turn blue in support of prostate cancer awareness
Calgary and Toronto City Hall Flag Raisings, September 17– To kick off the week, flag-raising ceremonies will take place at both Toronto and Calgary City Halls. Formal remarks will be made, including the reading of proclamations to commemorate the occasion (12:00 pm local time)
PCC Truck n’ Tailgate Calgary, September 17 – Some of Calgary’s finest food trucks will be stationed in front of City Hall for post flag-raising festivities
PCC’s Truck n’ Tailgate Toronto, September 20 – This street food festival will feature top Toronto Food Trucks and live entertainment, with proceeds supporting the cause. Event takes place on Lombard St. between Church and Victoria from 11-3 pm

Prostate Cancer Canada representatives, including survivors, will be available for interviews with onsite photo opportunities at each event. Full event details can be found at prostatecancer.ca.

One in seven men will be affected by prostate cancer in their lifetime. Show your support by participating in a local event, donning the signature PCC tie or scarf, a symbol of hope and unity that we will ultimately find a cure or making a donation in support of those affected and their families.
