Screening on the Hill - Have you been tested?
9/19/2011
Toronto, ON – September 19, 2011
– Prostate Cancer Canada – the national foundation for prostate cancer information, resources and support – is leveraging Prostate Cancer Awareness Week as a timely opportunity to remind and inform Canadians about the importance of prevention, education and early detection of prostate cancer.
On Tuesday, September 20 – the day after Parliament resumes - Prostate Cancer Canada in cooperation with the Speaker of the House of Commons, Andrew Scheer, will be offering prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing to all
Parliamentarians and their spouses.
Parliament will be encouraged to participate in
Screening on the Hill
.
PSA testing will be offered in honour of the late Leader of the Official Opposition, the Honourable Jack Layton.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to afflict men, with more than 25,000 Canadian men expected to be diagnosed this year. During his lifetime, 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with the disease. The good news is that over 90 per cent of prostate cancer cases are curable if detected and treated in their earliest stages.
Testing for prostate cancer can be as simple as having a PSA blood test. Men over the age of 40 are encouraged to speak to their doctor about their prostate cancer risk and inquire about prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood testing.
Prostate Cancer Canada representatives are available for comment throughout Prostate Cancer Awareness Week.
