Early Detection Guidelines Update

10/6/2011
Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC) strongly believes in the merits of screening for prostate cancer and actively encourages all men over the age of 40 to have the prostate cancer discussion with their doctor and begin PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing.

PCC is leading the development of a National Prostate Cancer Research Plan, which will likely identify strategies for improving the diagnostic tools and procedures, prevention methods and treatment options for prostate cancer.

The Canadian Urological Association (CUA) screening guidelines are in line with those of PCC and also recommend:
  • Baseline PSA testing for all men at 40-49 years of age;
  • PSA and DRE screening offered to all men every 2-4 years beyond age 50 with a life-expectancy of 10 years or greater, and
  • PSA and DRE screening to all men over the age of 40 with a family history of African or Caribbean descent.
Other News
The PCA3 urine screening test was approved recently by Health Canada to help physicians to determine if a second biopsy is indicated (i.e. where PSA is elevated and DRE is abnormal, but first biopsy is negative). It will now be made available across Canada. The PCA3 test may reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies and therefore support the PSA advocacy efforts.
