Well-Done Meat Consumption May Increase Prostate Cancer Risk
Research into the dietary habits of about a thousand men from the Cleveland area has found that a high consumption of meats, especially of red meat prepared by grilling, is positively associated with an increased risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer.  This particular study, which was led by Dr. John Witte of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), has a number of limitations, but it does add support to other investigations connecting meat consumption with cancer risk.

Toronto researchers speculate regarding a link between prostate cancer and oral contraceptive use
Very preliminary and speculative research, designed to spark further inquires, suggests that there may be a connection between oral contraceptive use and rising rates of prostate cancer.  One theory is that the widespread use of birth-control pills in various populations may result in a higher level of estrogen in the environment, which might, in turn, increase prostate cancer risk.

2006 Conference Information

The theme this year was "Winning the War against Prostate Cancer"

The keynote speaker was retired Canadian Armed Forces General Paul Mason who gave an outstanding opening address on applying the principals of war strategy to Winning the War against Prostate Cancer.

The opening dinner cocktail reception included a military display by the Calgary Highlanders, with soldiers present demonstrating the tools of their trade. In his opening remarks, Bob Shiell said that reinforcements were on the way to lend assistance.  At that point the doors to the Ballroom opened and the pipes and drums of the Calgary Highlands marched in.  They put on a 20 minute performance of drumming, piping and Highland dancing. This was followed by a sit-down dinner and General Mason's presentation.

For the fun night, in keeping with the theme, we presented "Stage Door Canteen", in reference to the WWII canteens for serviceman.  Delegates enjoyed wine, beer and nibbles in the foyer before dinner.  When the ballroom doors opened they were greeted by the Prime Time Big Band playing the Glenn Miller hit, In The Mood.  A delicious buffet dinner followed, and then the dance floor opened. A big success.
