Prostate Cancer Canada and Movember: How We Work Together

It’s the exciting hairy month of Movember, and as President and CEO of Prostate Cancer Canada, I couldn’t be more pleased with what this global phenomenon has done to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer in order to eradicate the disease.

You may not know this, but Movember is a global organization that raises funds for men’s health issues with campaigns taking place in 21 countries around the world. Prostate cancer is one of the three areas receiving funding from Movember in addition to mental health and testicular cancer. We are very proud to be one of Movember’s men’s health partners in Canada and to be able to work so closely together to address prostate cancer.

We occasionally get asked about the relationship between Prostate Cancer Canada and Movember. People often think we’re the same organization, which isn’t the case. We do, however, work very closely together.

Last year Canadian Mo Bros and Mo Sistas raised $42.6 million. But what happens next? Where does Movember leave off and Prostate Cancer Canada pick up? Well our team helps to allocate funds raised by Canadians to the 85 programs  that support research that will have the greatest potential to improve prostate cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment and to better manage survivorship. Our team appreciates that we’ve been entrusted with a very special mission and we apply a strategic, specialized skill set to stewarding the Movember funds through a fair and transparent peer review process to ensure that only the most promising and high quality research is funded.

In the coming months, we will be announcing a new group of funded research projects as well as a new series of programs designed to help improve the lives of prostate cancer survivors, their partners, caregivers and family members. These programs are part of a new initiative called ASAP, A Survivorship Action Partnership, and they represent a $10 million investment of Movember funds. All this is in addition to raising awareness and educating people about prostate cancer – a mission that we share in spirit with our good friends, allies and important donors – Movember.
