Discovering a New Cancer Killer

Dr. Marek Los (2004 Research Grant)

Marek Los’ research story is classic. While studying the process of cell death he stumbled upon a protein called apoptin which kills cancer cells while sparing healthy cells. Apoptin is sneaky. Cancer cells use certain pathways to keep themselves alive. Apoptin hijacks these pathways and redirects them to kill cancer cells. Even better, apoptin seems to work especially well in hormone refractory prostate cancer – a stage of cancer that is nearly impossible to treat. More research is needed but Los’ work may lead to new treatment options.
