A: We are the leading national organization devoted solely to ending the threat of prostate cancer. Our mandate is to support new and innovative research initiatives which have scientific merit particularly those from young investigators. At this time, we are focused on biological and clinical research projects and will not fund research into the psycho-social aspects of the disease. Our rigorous review process ensures that only the most promising research projects are chosen. Review teams are composed of researchers with special qualifications in the area of study. Research proposals should contribute directly to the mission of Prostate Cancer Canada. Prior work in the area of cancer is not a prerequisite. Q: How can I receive research funding from you? A: We offer funding for innovative research that helps men today through advances in screening, diagnosis and treatment through the generous donations of individual as well as companies. Grants require formal applications and are subject to specific eligibility and other requirements. Applications are completed online through our website. Q: What are the eligibility requirements for a grant? A: You must be based in, or formally affiliated with, an eligible Canadian host institution such as a university, research institute or health care agency. Applications from for-profit organizations are not eligible. At this time, we are focused on biological and clinical research projects and will not fund research into the psycho-social aspects of the disease. Q: Why isn't my name on the list of approved grants posted on your Web site? A: We only publish the names of successful applicants. Also, only the name of the principal investigator is listed. Co-applicants and additional authors do not appear on the Web site. Q: Who serves on your review panels? A: Our Scientific Medical and Advisory Committee is comprised of some of Canada's most highly respected urology oncologists, radiologist clinicians and cancer specialists. Q: I am an investigator who is doing research outside Canada. Can I apply for research grant funds? A: Yes, but only if you are based in, or formally affiliated with, an eligible Canadian host institution, such as a university, research institute or health-care agency. We encourage international collaborations. Co-investigators can be from outside of Canada. Q: When can I apply for funding? A: We post the competition timelines on our Web site. Q: Do you support new investigators? A: Yes. We award grants to new investigators to build on their innovative ideas. Researchers are encouraged to leverage these awards for longer-term operating grants from other funding agencies. Q: What is the success rate for grant applications to Prostate Cancer Canada? A: Like every other major granting agency we face perennial financial constraints. However, we were able to offer funding to 29.5 per cent of grant applications in our last competition (2006-07). Of 61 applications received, most scored high ratings due to excellence of their proposal and hence, the "approvable" score to receive panel review was raised to 3.5. A total of 33 were reviewed by the panel and 55% (18/33) per cent were awarded funding.
