$180,000 commitment to Prostate Cancer Canada by the Building Trades of Alberta

Red Deer – March 19th, 2015 - Prostate Cancer Canada and the Building Trades of Alberta today announced new funding that will support groundbreaking research into the prognosis and treatment of prostate cancer. The funding is described as an "apprenticeship" - a unique opportunity for a talented young researcher to work on leading-edge research with the best equipment and alongside the brightest minds.

Successful apprentice, Samar Hegazy, will work with Dr. Tarek Bismar's lab at the Prostate Cancer Centre and the University of Calgary as a postdoctoral clinical research fellow. Dr. Bismar’s team is working to identify biomarkers to differentiate slow-growing versus aggressive prostate cancers. The team is building a tissue bank of 250 prostate cancers to test those biomarkers and believe that the results of this work will better predict the potential spread of prostate cancers and in turn, better predict patient outcomes.

"We are proud to participate in the funding of these critical prostate cancer research positions that will help to expand on the awareness, prevention and treatment of this menacing disease." says Warren Fraleigh, President, Building Trades of Alberta Charitable Foundation and Executive Director, Building Trades of Alberta. "We are also pleased to support upcoming fundraising efforts of Prostate Cancer Canada including title sponsorship of upcoming Do it for Dads Day Walk Run in Calgary and Edmonton this June."

"This support from the Building Trades of Alberta is absolutely outstanding," says Rocco Rossi, President and CEO, Prostate Cancer Canada. “Their $180K commitment will further help to improve outcomes of the one in seven Canadian men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. We’re thrilled to be announcing another research apprenticeship and support of upcoming fundraising efforts made possible thanks to the generosity of the Building Trades of Alberta."
