Winning on and off the golf course

ClubLink hosts second annual Plaid for Dad Golf Day May 21 across Ontario

While Joe Ward admits he’ll never play with the pros, he loves to golf. When he and his older brother, Bob hit the course in May 2018 for the Plaid for Dad Golf Day presented by ClubLink, they never expected they’d win a trip to Florida.

“We entered the tournament because the disease hits close to home,” says Joe. “My father and younger brother were both diagnosed with prostate cancer. It’s an opportunity for me and Bob to get out and enjoy a game of golf for a good cause and meet other people who support Prostate Cancer Canada.”

After their father, James Ward was diagnosed in his late 70s, he lived the rest of his life without complications. Because the cancer was not aggressive and his age, it was not recommended that he go through treatment. However, his younger brother, Dan Ward, experienced a more aggressive form of prostate cancer that spread to his kidneys. He passed away in January 2017 at the age of 64.

Knowing they have a family history, Joe and Bob keep on top of their prostate health, recognizing that it is better to deal with the disease before it spreads to other parts of the body.

“My father and brother’s experience with prostate cancer has obviously made us more aware,” says Joe. “I never really concerned myself with it until I realized it was so close to home. But now we have regular health checkups and are vigilant about looking after ourselves.”

Winning the ClubLink prize

The trip to Florida was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It included flights for two, a hotel for two nights and golf at ClubLink courses in the area. The brothers opted to extend their trip to one week, playing two games a day. “We were two pretty tuckered out guys when we got back!” says Joe.

Participants this year will be up against Joe and Bob, who plan on returning. “We have to defend our title!” they joke. “We want to make a difference. It is important to donate to Prostate Cancer Canada but it is equally important to join a group of guys and gals at ClubLink to make a statement that we care.

“Prostate cancer is something men should be aware of, and they should be vigilant in looking after themselves. The tournament is something that men can rally around and the funds raised will help men get better treatments and tools for diagnoses in the future.”
