A cause close to the family

Terry Donnelly’s father was diagnosed with a slow-growing form of prostate cancer 14 years ago at 77. It continues to be watched and fortunately has not impacted his active lifestyle.

As one of seven brothers, and a father of two sons, prostate cancer is on the family’s mind: “It’s something we talk about. Every member of my family has been a volunteer, doing Movember, doing Plaid For Dad to help raise money. It’s a way to support important research that’s being enabled by Prostate Cancer Canada.”

His support took a new direction in 2017 when he became Chairman and CEO of Hill Street Beverage Company, which produces alcohol-free wine and beer.

“We’re not just selling another product but something that’s making a difference in people’s lives. It’s profoundly inspiring to be part of a company like that. It’s something that’s right at the core of our foundational values as a company,” he says.

But the commitment doesn’t stop there. Hill Street supports charities addressing conditions caused or worsened by alcohol. A percentage of every sale is donated to five Canadian charities, totalling a whopping $1.7 million since the company’s founding in 2008.

Terry reached out to Prostate Cancer Canada soon after taking the helm at Hill Street. Conversations led to action, resulting in $60,000 donated in 2018 - and potentially much more in the years to come.

A recent innovation for Hill Street was branding their beer with the Plaid for Dad logo and messaging leading up to the Father’s Day fundraiser. He says: “It was the first time we’ve ever done that. We were thrilled with the results, we had great pick up. Among consumers and on social media, awareness of the campaign was absolutely fantastic.”

Dreaming big is part of Hill Street’s and Terry’s nature: “We’ve set it as a company goal that we want to be the biggest sustaining donor of the causes we support. You’ve got to have big audacious goals you set and work towards. We would love to be there when a cure is found so that we can turn our attention to helping other issues caused and complicated by alcohol.”

Your donation helps protect men and their families from prostate cancer.
