Q & A with Fred Chartrand, TIEd Together Contributor

With an exciting launch in Toronto, January 10th, Prostate Cancer Canada has kicked off a cross-Canada tour of the TIEd Together photo exhibit. TIEd Together is a black-and-white photo exhibit telling the stories of Canadians' experiences with prostate cancer.

February 6th marks the beginning of the exhibit in Winnipeg. To celebrate, we caught up with award-winning photographer,Fred Chartrand, to ask him about his involvement in TIEd Together.  Fred photographed Olympic gold medalist Alex Baumann as part of the exhibit.

Why is the issue of prostate cancer important to you?

Many years ago my mother's partner died from prostate cancer. Back then, prostate cancer was not talked about or dealt with as it is today, so I think making people more aware is a very positive thing. That is one of the reasons I thought the TIEd Together project would raise the awareness level even more.

How did you and Alex Baumann come to work together on this project?

I was surprised when Photosensitive asked me to photograph Alex as part of the TIEd Together exhibit. I had no idea that a super athlete like him was struck with prostate cancer. He is a poster boy of health - he swims almost daily and is in great condition.

I photographed Alex in his pool at his home. The image is symbolic- a great swimmer, Alex Baumann, treading water. It was great working with one of Canada's super athletes and to know that because of early detection he is now cancer free.

What do you hope people will take away from the TIEd Together exhibit?

Through the use of photographs we put a human face on the disease. Every day people are affected by prostate cancer. Healthy people, like Olympic swimmer Alex Baumann, have had to fight this disease.
Fred Chartrand retired from the Canadian Press on February 28, 2008. Since February, this national award-winning photographer/photo journalist has freelanced for national newspapers, magazines, news agencies and corporate clients.
