It’s Our Time To Celebrate

It's my time, it's your time, it's our time.

Today, we celebrate our first year anniversary in Atlantic Canada!

Our Atlantic office was established to raise awareness and support research and programs for the fight
against prostate cancer- and it’s been a busy year! Below is a snapshot of what PCC Atlantic has been up to.
March 22, 2011
PCC Atlantic opens its doors!

We had an opportunity to meet Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen during a campaign stop in Halifax. We presented them with a PCC tie and scarf to commemorate the occasion. Two days later, we met NDP Leader Jack Layton. Having faced prostate cancer himself, we were honoured to meet the man who helped bring awareness to the disease.

April 28,

Last April, Halifax hosted the Wake Up Call Breakfast. In a major show of political support, members of the NS legislature wore PCC ties and scarves in the house of assembly to honour the date.

“With the facilities at the PCC - Atlantic Region office being made available to us in
March of 2011, we had finally found a "home". We have been made welcome by Peter Mallette and staff and know that we have the support of the PCC organization, not only in Halifax, but from Steve, Helene and all of the staff in Toronto. The facilities provide us with a great meeting space (even have free coffee), availability of printed material, a spot for the exercise and yoga groups, etc.. But mainly a place where prostate cancer patients/survivors can talk freely about the disease in the comfort of their own "home". They can listen to others, exchange information, learn from each other and do so with privacy, comfort and respect for each other.”

Peter MacDonald
Coordinator, PCCN - Halifax Region

Over the past year, we’ve welcomed 5 new prostate cancer support groups in Atlantic Canada:  Bay St. George, NL, Conception Bay North, NL, Greater Moncton, NB, Greater Saint John NB and the Halifax Rainbow Warriors – the only prostate cancer support group in Canada for gay men.

PCC awarded a Pilot Grant to Dr. Patrick Lee of Dalhousie University. Dr. Lee is looking at how the immune system responds to a specific type of anti-cancer virus.

Halifax hosted the PCCN Leaders Conference, bringing together survivors and their partners from across Canada. We were honoured to have Olivia Chow as our keynote speaker, and to hear from Nova Scotia’s Premier,  Darrell Dexter.

“On this first Anniversary of the PCCN Halifax Resource Center, I wish to express my appreciation for the most valuable assistance and counsel Peter Mallette and his staff have provide during the start-up of the 'PCCN' Greater Saint John Prostate Cancer Support Group.  They are capable and passionate individuals.  The invitation I received to attend the National Conference in Halifax was timely and proved to be educational and encouraging.  It is a privilege to represent the PCCN.  The caliber of personnel, quality of material and guidance, all blend to assist with the care we want to provide to those on a prostate cancer journey.  Congratulations on a job well done and best wishes for a meaningful future."

Doug Moore, Coordinator
PCCN Greater Saint John Prostate Cancer Support Group

November, 2011

Members of the New Brunswick legislature wore PCC ties and scarves inside the House of Assembly to help raise prostate cancer awareness.

January, 2012

We launched PSA Fitness, a free 9 week exercise program for prostate cancer survivors. PSA Fitness combines gentle strength training, aerobics and yoga. The program was so successful, that we’re starting a new (10 week!) session later this month.
We have a lot to celebrate – but we’re also excited about the upcoming year.

In April, the Wake Up Call Breakfast will be hosted in Moncton for the first time. We’ll also be expanding the Father’s Day Walk Run to Fredericton this coming June.

Support services will continue expanding in 2012 as we work with local community groups; we plan on launching the first support group in Nova Scotia for men of African and Caribbean descent!

Of course, none of this would be possible without the dedication and support from our community partners, supporters and volunteers. We are grateful for your ongoing passion and commitment. You’re the reason we have so much to celebrate on our first anniversary!

It's my time.  It's your time.  It's our time.
