In September, PCC released recommendations with one overarching goal: for more men to get tested for prostate cancer. Currently, the test that is initially used for the early detection of prostate cancer is the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test. It is a simple blood test that detects the levels of a protein released by the prostate when it is under stress.

It’s the exciting hairy month of Movember, and as President and CEO of Prostate Cancer Canada, I couldn’t be more pleased with what this global phenomenon has done to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer in order to eradicate the disease.

A catheter is a long tube about a foot in diameter that’s shoved up your penis through the urethra into your bladder. Okay, it’s really not that large – maybe an eighth to a quarter of an inch in diameter. It’s made up of two tubes, one long and one short. The long one ends up in your bladder and has a bulb on the end to hold it inside the bladder. The short tube is used to fill the bulb with saline. When you want to take the catheter out, you cut the short tube to let the saline out, then pull the long tube out.
