Media, online or off, can’t by itself raise awareness about prostate cancer, its risk factors and the need for research funding. Crucial to that effort are the great community events that support our cause. There’s no substitute for real people interacting and supporting one another, the reach and the cool factor of Facebook and Twitter notwithstanding.

A couple of weeks ago, when last we heard from intrepid cyclists Shane Vanier and his sons, Sean and Trevor, they were just 15 kilometres from the Alberta border at Crowsnest Pass. Only another 6,000 or so kilometres and $48,000 to go!

It’s time for men to take charge of their health. This is even more important for those of African or Caribbean descent as they are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer, the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men.

When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in June 2009, it was a surprise to me to learn that there were only two support groups in all of New Brunswick, Fredericton and Miramichi. There had been active groups in Moncton and Saint John, but not for quite a number of years.
